How One Student Veteran Is Excelling in School, Work, and Family Life: Taylor Siemen’s Veteran Journey at GGU

From Combat Boots to Classrooms

For Taylor Siemen, the road from military service to higher education has been anything but ordinary. A Fresno native and veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps and California International Guard, Taylor is now pursuing a degree in accounting and data analytics at Golden Gate University (GGU). Amidst full-time work and fatherhood, he has found a community at GGU that not only supports his academic journey but also honors his service.

“I chose GGU because of the flexibility it offers to working professionals,” Taylor says. That flexibility has been crucial as he manages a full-time job and parenting responsibilities, all while attending school. Living three hours away from campus, he appreciates the university’s accommodating structure that enables him to thrive without compromising his other commitments.

A Career Rooted in Service

Taylor began his military career in the Marine Corps as a 72 12 Low Altitude Air Defense Gunner. His service continued with the California International Guard, where he worked as a budget analyst before transitioning to his current role as an inspector in the Inspector General’s Office. These experiences have instilled in him a strong sense of purpose and a drive to serve beyond the uniform.

His long-term goal? To use his education to support fellow veterans during their transitions to civilian and academic life. “My background has definitely inspired me to give back,” he explains. “I want to help veterans find the resources and support they need, just like I have.”

Leveraging Veteran Resources at GGU

Taylor’s transition to student life has been made smoother by GGU’s robust veteran support programs. Utilizing his VA benefits, he’s been able to dive back into education with renewed confidence. “GGU is really helpful for veterans who might not have been in school for a while,” he notes. “There are tutoring services and other resources that help reignite your academic mindset.”

GGU’s commitment to veterans is more than just logistical—it’s cultural. The University’s Diller Center for Veterans of US Military Service and its chapter of Student Veterans of America (SVA) offer community, mentorship, and guidance for service members transitioning into academic life.

“SVA really helps you get back into that learning mindset,” Taylor says. “It’s not just about academics. It’s about building a community with people who understand your journey.”

A Life in Balance

Balancing military service, education, work, and family isn’t easy, but Taylor is doing it with purpose and perseverance. His story reflects the realities many student veterans face: navigating a new chapter while honoring the values of their service.

For Taylor, GGU is more than just a place to earn a degree. It’s a platform for building a future that’s rooted in service, shaped by education, and strengthened by community.

As he looks ahead, Taylor remains committed to helping others while pursuing his own academic and professional goals. His journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support system, veterans can transition successfully and thrive in the civilian world.
