GGU was founded in 1901 to serve adult learners and saw an influx of student veterans following the World Wars. The school started reaching out to the veteran population, specifically in the mid-1900s. The Helen Diller Center for Veterans of US Military Service is the latest example of how GGU serves that population. It’s an online hub of information and community for student veterans, with plans for an in-person center at the school. Center staff are available for virtual appointments and can help answer onboarding, transition, and other questions about the student veteran experience.

The Veteran Ambassador Program is a work-study program through the Department of Veterans Affairs. There are currently three ambassadors at GGU, and students in these positions can assist fellow student veterans throughout their experience at the university. Examples of how they can help include navigating life in San Francisco, providing more information on VR&E programs, navigating coursework, and communicating with professors.

When understanding and utilizing your VA benefits, the most important contacts to know are the VA certifying officials. The biggest advice is to start preparing early, making sure you turn in the necessary forms to their offices before each term so that they can certify your paperwork and get your G.I. Bill®️ benefits paid on time.
