Mental Health Resources for Student Veterans

Mental Health Resources for Student Veterans.jpeg

Student veterans are different from their classmates in many ways, making it often harder to understand what they may need from professors and faculty. A survey conducted by Kognito revealed that 40% of student veterans have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 24% have depression, and 8% have entertained suicidal ideations in the month before the survey.

There are many mental health resources for student veterans, but it may be hard to figure out the right one for you. Here are some options for you or a veteran that you may know.

BeThere with Military OneSource

Sometimes talking to a colleague or peer is helpful when seeking some advice or support during a difficult season or transition. The BeThere peer assistance program allows veterans to speak privately with peer coaches. The program is open to service members, families, and veterans for 365 days after their separation. The service is available 24/7, and you can reach them at 800-342-9647.

Smartphone Apps for Veterans

The Department of Defense and the VA have compiled a list of smartphone apps that veterans can use independently or with therapy. Some of the apps on the list are endorsed by these two entities, and others are not. A complete list of the apps is available here.

Veteran Training Portal

Student veterans can use this free online self-help portal for some of their challenges during everyday life. It's not a substitute for counseling, but the tools are based on mental health practices that have helped others. The tools can help with managing anger, parenting, and other problem-solving skills.

VA Telemental Health

If you can't get into the VA for a physical appointment, you can ask your provider to connect you with the telemental health program.

Military Crisis Line

Active-duty students, Guard or Reserve, as well as their family members, can reach a trained counselor by calling the crisis line at 800-273-8255, initiating a chat online, or by texting 838255. The help is confidential and free.

GGU Wellness Resources

GGU students have access to the GGU Wellness Resources, where individual counseling sessions are offered to help students work towards their goals. Students also have access to META -- a mobile app that gives you access to counseling services. GGU students get two teletherapy sessions at no cost, which students can do via video, phone, or chat.

Trust GGU and its robust support for veterans because our goal is to help you succeed.
